Wall Lamp "Ariane" | WLZ 91

The ARIANE WLZ 91 wall light by Christian Schmidt, designed in 1991 for TECNOLUMEN, is a luminaire of great formal restraint – and this is precisely where its particular presence lies. Two matt brushed stainless steel cylinders frame the elongated diffuser, giving the light a clear, almost architectural structure. The light is emitted broadly, softly and evenly – not as an effect, but as a calm, atmospheric element within the room.

In its design approach, the ARIANE WLZ 91 is reminiscent of lighting designs by the Bauhaus student Max Krajewski. The affinity is less a matter of direct imitation than of a related understanding of light, material and construction: clear geometries, visible function, understated elegance and a form that integrates naturally into architecture.

ARIANE is particularly suited to places where light provides orientation while becoming part of the design itself: beside mirrors, in corridors, on staircases or in representative transitional areas. Its vertical orientation emphasises wall surfaces, accompanies movement through the room and creates a balanced connection between function and design precision.

The fact that the WLZ 91 works convincingly in demanding architectural contexts is demonstrated by its use, among other places, in the Kornhaus in Dessau – an important site of Bauhaus Modernism. The luminaire can also be found in major museums and administrative buildings worldwide. Wherever spaces are not merely to be illuminated, but subtly supported in their spatial effect, ARIANE reveals its strength: as a restrained, long-lasting lighting object with a clear design attitude.
