Table Lamp | SF 28

1928

The SF 28 table lamp is a design from 1928 and stands for the clear, functional approach to design that emerged in several parts of Europe during the late 1920s. Its origins lie in the context of Swedish Functionalism – a movement that, in parallel with the Bauhaus, developed a new understanding of architecture, interiors and everyday objects: clear, purposeful, true to the material and free from unnecessary ornament.

The lamp reduces its form to just a few elementary shapes. An opal glass sphere forms the centre of the design. Resting on it is a polished aluminium hemisphere, which is not fixed in place but held by friction alone. This allows the reflector to be moved easily and individually adjusted. The light can be shielded, directed and set without glare – a solution that is as simple as it is intelligent.

It is precisely this constructive clarity that reveals the lamp’s affinity with functionalist thinking. The SF 28 does not seek to decorate; it convinces through its function. Sphere, cylinder, metal and glass form a balanced composition in which every detail serves a purpose. The chrome-plated and black lacquered metal parts give the lamp a precise, architectural character, while the glass sphere provides a soft, even light.

At the same time, other European manufacturers were developing comparable ideas. In the Netherlands, the company Gispen produced modern lamps during the same period, placing technical purpose, serial production and a reduced formal language at the centre of its designs. There, too, one finds designs with loosely placed reflectors that allow the light to be directed flexibly. The SF 28 can therefore be understood as part of a broader European departure: away from ornament and towards a new, clear and practical modernity.

To this day, the SF 28 appears remarkably contemporary. It is suitable as a table lamp for desks, sideboards, consoles or occasional tables, where it unfolds a calm, sculptural presence. Its strength lies not in a loud gesture, but in the balance of function, material and proportion.
